Former Ill. Gov. Ryan was convicted today on corruption charges.
When Ryan was Ill. secretary of state, he used his office, and his employees, to prevent Jim Tobin, his Libertarian opponent, from running against him for governor.
The resulting two-person mock election was a narrow victory over the deomocrat.
If Tobin had been in the race, as he had the right to be, the results might have been different - or Ryan might have won anyway.
Illinois could use something like a "truth commission" to get to t he bottom of that scandal. It's been hushed up for too long. Ryan's already convicted, and the statute of limitations has passed for his henchmen - I just want the truth to come out.
(Governor v. Ill. State Bd. of Elections, 268 F.3d 517, 528 (7th Cir. 2001)).
