A comment I left to this newshounds story on the FEC hearing.
I think the south dakota/thune situation is being misrepresented. The South Dakota Politics Report was a blog run by a student. It was having a real impact on the race, by exposing slanted coverage in the local major paper. The thune campaign gave the guy 8 grand - basicly so he could afford to keep doing it.
It didn't suddenly become any more pro-Thune than it had been; the guy basicly recovered some of the costs of his volunteer activity.
This was properly disclosed to the FEC. The FEC cannot require bloggers or other editorialists to have disclaimers, or otherwise dictate their content - that's Tornillo v Miami Herald, Talley v California, McIntyre v Ohio, Reno v ACLU.
